| SHPE National History | |||
| The
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles,
California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los
Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional
engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The
concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly
established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow
to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United
States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional
and student chapters throughout the nation. |

| SHPE Chapter History | |||
| SHPE
at San Diego State University arose from the efforts of a dedicated group
of M.E.Ch.A. students who shared a common interest in engineering. They
realized the need for an organization which would address itself specifically
to the needs of Hispanic engineering and science students. In 1978, these
students, including Roberto Espinosa and Ricardo Reyes, along with the help
from Mr. Frank Holmes, devoted the time and effort necessary to successfully
start a SHPE chapter here at SDSU. Since
its inception, the chapter has grown steadily through its inclusion of
activities which represent the very essence of ACE-Programs. These activities
consist of recruitment events, such as the Science and Engineering Day-Junior
High School Conference which was established in 1982, to retention activities
such as grade school tutoring, which began at Chollas and Fulton Elementary
schools in 1984 and has now expanded to include 9 other elementary schools.
With increasing corporate relations due to Career Conferences, company
tours, and guest speakers from every aspect of engineering and science,
the chapter has stepped into this decade with the knowledge and communication
skills necessary for a professional organization. |
